058 / CARMAKOMA

Photobucket

Meet Heidi Lykke and Angelica Weiss, the designing duo behind Denmark’s Carmakoma. The two met in design school in 1997 and got along so well, they decided to create a line of their own. I first learned about their line from browsing through fashion blogs. I was instantly attracted to the monochromatic feel their first collection had. I, as a lover of all things black, loved the head to toe looks with bits of added textures.

Carmakoma’s “style is rough and feminine, and all the collections are targeted at curvy women with charisma. It is of key value for carmakoma to create designs that give opportunity to style the clothes to suit your own mood and personality. The inspiration comes mainly from music and the urban life of the world’s metropoles, and all the clothes are created with special focus on slimming cuts and effects. The quality is high, the prices are competitive and all the collections reflect the hottest current trends.”

It definitely seems as though their vision is right up my alley. If its right up yours too, then you’re in luck. Their new autumn/winter 2009 collection launches this Saturday, August 1st. In preparation for that, they are now offering 70% off of everything. Yes, you read that correctly – 70% off! Everything is currently priced between $20-$40. I am definitely placing my order as I’ve had my eye on a few things (seen below).

After snooping around on Twitter, I noticed that they featured small sneak peeks of lookbook images on their page, which I’ve posted below. I’m excited to see the entire collection this Saturday! What do you guys think of Carmakoma?

057 / BIG BLACK BOOTS

Photobucket

(naomi campbell and kristen mcmenamy photographed by steven miesel)

One of the best things about the 90s was the grunge era of fashion. To some’s dismay, there has been a 90s revival. I, however, am not one of those people. Flannel, Doc Martens, thermals, tablecloth floral prints, bring it on! There was something so amazing about the haphazard mash up of textures, fabrics, and shapes.

One of the most important fashion pieces had to be the combat boots. Whether worn with babydoll dresses, flannel shirts or shorts 4 sizes too big, they were absolutely crucial to pulling off that angsty teen look. So after having a mini My So-Called Life marathon this week and falling back in love with Jordan Catalano, I’ve decided that I need a pair of big black boots in my possession. They are so versatile and can go with absolutely anything as seen below.

Below are some boot selections in every price range. It would probably be overkill if I were to buy them all, right? My bank account is going to hate me…

2. Nine West Jawbreaker Boots – $149

3. Charlotte Russe Platform Granny Boots – $34.99

056 / RACHEL ROY FOR MACY’S

I’m going to be honest, the only thing I knew about Rachel Roy was that she was the (ex)wife of Damon Dash, Jay-Z’s former bff. I knew that she was a fashion designer but I’d never checked out any of her collections. So while catching up on my fashion blog fix, I got word that she is partnering with Macy’s to release a diffusion line in August. Looking at the lookbook images, I’m not too terribly impressed, however, the accessories are amazing. The jewelry ranges from $40 to $195, $79 to $199 for footwear and $69 to $109 for handbags.

I immediately am lusting after those rings! They are so fab! Usually I’m not much of a ring person but lately I’ve been on this ring-buying kick. If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen my new knuckle ring that I purchased from TrendToGo. It’s ‘inspired’ by the Elizabeth & James ring that has been featured all over the blogosphere.

Rachel’s line is set to debut August 1st online and in-stores. Do you see anything you like?

053 / BYRON LARS DOES PLUS SIZES

If you happened to tune in to watch this year’s Rip The Runway special on BET, then you’d have seen Byron Lars’ collection alongside Korto Momolu (from Project Runway) and Monif C. Byron Lars started designing under his own label in 1991 with a small collection of sportswear focusing on what Lars refers to as “twisted American classics.” Taking inspiration from such unlikely sources as his grandfather’s hunting jacket, Byron crossbreeds it with a “Dior New Look” proportion to create a Dutchess of Windsor meets Field and Stream hybrid.

Juxtapositions such as above, or as in taking a men’s cotton dress shirt and then distorting it to the point of resembling a Dorothy Lamour sarong, have become Byron Lars’ trademark. “When edgy fashion is steeped in something familiar, it becomes far less alienating to the consuming public,” says Lars.

After only his second season in business, Women’s Wear Daily hailed Byron as “Rookie of the Year.” His line was immediately snapped up by such prestigious retailers as Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s as well as one hundred other specialty stores throughout the U.S. along with some distribution in the U.K. and France.

By the contractual end of his licensees, Byron chose to direct his energy away from the designer collection and focus on a contemporary line and pricing structure. “I wanted it to be more about the clothes and less about the ‘hype’,” says Lars. This redirection was the beginning of “Byron Lars Beauty Mark.” Initially a cotton Lycra shirting based offering, Beauty Mark took its cue from the shirts and shirt dresses of the previous collection that put the designer on the map (only this time, without the lofty price point). Since its inception, Beauty Mark has enjoyed eight years of success and is now expanding its product line to include knits, sportswear and dresses in addition to the chic and sexy shirts for which the line is highly sought after.

Here is an exerpt from his recent interview with AMBERmag.

AMBERmag.com: What was your inspiration for your current collection?
BL:
I wanted to make pretty, yet modern clothes with construction and attention to detail that harkened back to the dress making and tailoring of the forties and fifties.

AMBERmag.com: What about the styles of the 40’s and 50’s intrigue you?
BL:
I really love the level of polish that is indicative of that time period of fashion. I think it’s especially fresh to pair something ultra polished with something that is really not. For instance, a white wife beater under a flawlessly tailored, no-nonsense coatdress.

AMBERmag.com: Tell us about what you’re currently working on ?
BL:
I am currently developing an extended size collection accomodating sizes 14 through 24. I am finally addressing a long- standing request of the many would be customers that can’t buy my clothes as they are sized at present.

AMBERmag.com: When will this line launch? How will it differ from your other lines? What are the price points?
BL:
The plus size line is still a work in progress that I hope to get up and running by Spring 2010. Although it will be edited down, it won’t differ much from the main line and that is exactly what I hope to set it apart from the plus size offering currently available out there. The price points will be contemporary with the look and detailing of high end.

Here are some lookbook images from Lars’ recent collection. I think its exciting that more designers are delving into the plus size world! Are you excited for what is to come?

052 / 80%20 FALL/AUTUMN COLLECTION

While I’m not much of a streetwear fanatic, I’ve been keeping my eye on 80%20’s shoe collection. Being the shoe girl that I am, I love interesting takes on simple shapes. That perfectly describes the 80%20 wedge. This fall, they’ve added elements of bondage with added chains, buckles and straps galore! Its sort’ve like they’ve designed with me in mind! I definitely see a few pairs that I wouldn’t mind adding a few to my overflowing shoe closet.

I know a lot of readers ask me about wearing heels for an extended period of time. I, honestly, have no tips, but what I can do is offer more comfortable alternatives. For many people, myself included, wedges are way more comfy than stilettos. If you’re trying to break into wearing heels, try a pair of wedges first. I have a pair of Juicy Couture wedges and its just like wearing flats. They are the best things in the world! I wore them almost 3 times a week last winter and I’m looking for a replacement pair. It looks like 80%20 will fit the bill. You can check out more of their shoes on their website and KarmaLoop. What do you guys think? Are you feeling this collection?

ps. Added these Steve Maddens to my collection. This is as close to the Balenciagas as I’m gonna get.

051 / ALLOY FALL 2009 COLLECTION

I’ve been meaning to post about the fall collection of Alloy for a while. I routinely flipped through the catalog one day but found myself making a mental list of things I wanted to buy. That was never really the case with Alloy because, in my opinion, most of the cute clothing stops at XL. So while going through catalog, I saw some things that by no means were mind-blowing but I felt like would be amazing additions in my fall wardrobe.

I’ve posted before about my annoyance that Alloy seems to make small clothes in bigger sizes without taking into account the difference in body proportions from straight size to plus size. Another thing about Alloy is that their target audience are teens and young adults which means the clothing is cut narrower than regular women’s clothing. For me, as a pear-shape, their ultra-low rise jeans do nothing for me. I usually stick to skirts, dresses and tops. However, everyone is shaped different and what may not work for me may be magic for you. They currently go up to a juniors’ size 25 so if you’re so inclined to make a purchase, be sure to check their size chart beforehand.

I’ve noticed that lately I’m more and more attracted to pieces that have a structured and/or military feeling. It may just be my subconscious homage to Michael Jackson, who knows? Here are a few of my favorites from the fall collection.

ps. I’m posting a few past outfits of mine that feature some Alloy pieces so that will give you a better sense of fit on an actual fat body. FYI, I’m 5’11, 18/20 on top, 22/24 on bottom and LOVE short skirts!

050 / FATSPIRATION FRIDAY RETURNS (FINALLY!)

I’ve come to the conclusion that I fail at meeting deadlines when it comes to blogging. That in itself is amazing seeing as I’m a designer in real life and have deadlines everyday. Oh well, what can you do? So seeing as how Fatspiration Friday took an unplanned vacation the past two weeks, this post is larger than normal. Enjoy!
