139 / MUSINGS OF A FATSHIONISTA IS NOW ON FACEBOOK!

I’ve finally taken the plunge and created a fan page for Musings. I wanted to have a place where we can all discuss and ask questions about anything fashion-related. Whether its help with an outfit or where to buy cute ankle boots, we’re all here to help each other! This is also a great way to meet other fashionable people and get inspired.

Also feel free to let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see on Musings. I’d love to know what everyone thinks so don’t be shy! Become a fan!

137 / UNDERWEAR AS OUTERWARE REVISITED: BIKE SHORTS

While randomly browsing the internet this morning, I saw that Torrid is now selling bike shorts. I’ve been looking for a legit pair for a while, if you remember my Charles Anastase runway inspiration post a while ago.

I love the idea of taking something that you would usually wear under your clothes and making it the focal point of an outfit. Now that they are available in our size, I will definitely be buying multiple pairs! As usual, my default styling is to pair with thigh-highs and garter belts as I’ve mocked up before (see below)

(1. Dorothy Perkins Bomber Jacket 2. Betsey Johnson Babydoll Chemise 3. Black Biker Shorts 4. Textured Thigh-High/Garter Belt 5. Studded Worn Boots)

Besides pairing it with thigh-highs, there are other ways that biker shorts can be worn in the colder months. They can be layered over a pair of textured tights and worn with your favorite dress or skirt. You could channel a/w 09 Chloe and wear them with over-the-knee boots and a chunky cardigan.

If you’re still undecided on whether to take the bike shorts plunge, you can get the same look with Norwegian Wood’s bike short leggings.

She also has some floral bike shorts if you want to add a pop of feminine flair to your winter outfits.

With something like bike shorts, its all about experimenting and figuring out which way you like the best. Since they are only about $15-20, if you find that you don’t like the way that they look on you, you can always find other uses for them so its not a total waste of money. I’m always open to trying out different things because I may just come across something that I love and never would’ve tried otherwise.

What do you guys think of bike shorts? Is it something you could see yourself trying? Or is totally not something you’re into? Let me know in the comments!

136 / EDITORIAL: CRYSTAL RENN IN AUSTRALIAN HARPER’S BAZAAR

Since I’ve gotten behind on posting editorials, I decided to post three of my favorite ones back-to-back-to-back. I got all of the images from Every Body is Beautiful, an amazing archive of fashion imagery featuring models sized 10 and over. If you haven’t checked that blog out, you must!

The editorial below features blog favorite Crystal Renn in Australian Harper’s Bazaar, one of my all-time favorite. Crystal is styled in high-end designer clothes that showcase her curves, there is even an image that shows a bit of a bulge! Crystal looks absolutely amazing in these photos. Love it!

135 / EDITORIAL: CRYSTAL RENN IN ELLE ITALIA (SOME NSFW)

This editorial is from the December 2008 Elle Italia magazine that features Crystal Renn in couture. I love when Crystal does high-fashion shoots because her sultry look is a perfect fit.

134 / EDITORIAL: JOHANNA DRAY IN GALA MAGAZINE

This editorial features Johanna Dray and appeared in Gala magazine in Paris. I love the vintage feel of the shoot, back when the fleshier women were objects of art pieces. Just amazing.

133 / OOTD: RAINING SEQUINS

Today is my two-year anniversary working at BET.com. Therefore I wanted to add a bit of razzle-dazzle to my outfit. Enter the most amazing thrifted cardigan I’ve ever seen. Covered in blue, purple and green sequins, this cocoon-like cardigan was perfect to wear on this otherwise dreary and rainy day.

There was something about pairing my JIBRI ruffle-front halter with a more whimsical bottom piece, so I pulled out an old petticoat/tutu I scored on ebay a while ago. It originally was more puffy but I got rid of some of the layers of tulle and now I kind of regret it. Oh well…

132 / IGIGI’S ’16′ SHORT FILM

From Igigi’s press release—

Plus-size Brazilian model, Fluvia Lacerda, stars in ‘16’, a short film that challenges the stereotypes of beauty currently set by the film, fashion, and advertising industries. The film is a departure from the norm, as Lacerda is a size 16, rather than the usual size 2.

“Today women think they must fit unachievable molds in order to feel beautiful and sexy”, says Lacerda. “As a curvy woman I have always felt sexy under my skin and this film carries that very message, a message I hope will open people’s minds with regard to how diverse beauty can be.

This provocative film is directed by Mark De Paola, a fashion photographer and director whose portfolio includes Armani and DKNY. Lacerda has modeled for Torrid, Fashion Bug, and Biluzik. In ‘16’ she is shown in the shower, wearing lingerie, and then walking in an evening gown.

The two-minute film was commissioned by IGIGI, a women’s size 12+ fashion apparel retailer. ‘16’ is the first film to be created and produced by a plus size women’s fashion company.

“IGIGI’s philosophy is that every woman deserves to feel beautiful” says IGIGI’s founder and designer, Yuliya Raquel. “Television and fashion magazines are starting to acknowledge that women who are size 12-plus exist, but ‘16’ goes beyond that. We made this film because we believe that curvy women should not only feel acknowledged, but be celebrated, too. It represents how IGIGI sees women— beautiful, sexy and powerful.”

Love, love, LOVE this!

131 / OOTD: VELVETY GOODNESS

Its been way too long since my last OOTD post. So I’m starting up again by featuring this amazing velvet dress that I scored at the thrift store this past weekend. As I was combing through the racks of clothes, it was like a velvet explosion. Everywhere I looked, there were velvet dresses, blazers, skirts and bags so I had to get at least one. Well, I actually picked up this gray dress as well as a black one since they were $3.

I have to admit, wearing a long sleeve velvet dress underneath a wool blazer is intense. In the future, I’ll save this ensemble for when its really cold outside. Other than that, I absolutely love this dress and it will probably be a staple in the coming months.

I know a lot of ladies are weary when it comes to a bodycon fit being as how its tight across the belly. I say, if you got it, flaunt it. I don’t perceive it to be a flaw but if I want a much smoother line I could throw on some Spanx. Sometimes though, I like to just say the hell with it and keep it moving. Its all about confidence.

130 / THE COVETED REPORT: HEELS, HEELS, HEELS!

Being the lover of shoes that I am, I’m always coming across shoes that I wish I could magically add to my closet. Unfortunately being an adult with bills doesn’t permit such things so the only thing I get to do is stare at my computer screen lovingly. Below are three pairs that I am currently drooling over.

From left to right: Bakers Pepper ($289), Bakers Elizabeth ($100), Guess by Marciano Daylee ($289)

ps. You may have noticed the posts have slowed down lately. The BET Hip-Hop Awards are this coming Tuesday so I’ve been busy, busy, busy. Things should be back to normal soon!
