As usual, I went out for brunch today and used the opportunity to wear my black and red vinyl bra that I scored this past summer on eBay. I layered it under the sheer mesh dress from Hips & Curves and a sheer high waist skirt from Jibri. This outfit combines my love of sheer everything and vinyl anything, which is why fall/winter is my favorite time of the year.
So it’s been a while… the good news is that 2012 will definitely see a resurgence in blog activity. I’m sure I’ve said it previously but then I disappeared again haha but really, this time it’s for real. Nothing much has changed since I’ve last blogged except my address. I stopped crashing at Brittney’s and got my own place and now it’s basically me vs. the self-timer. Also, after almost 6 months, I was finally reunited with most of my wardrobe last week so I feel complete in a way. The outfits that I wear now are a better representation of where I’m at and what I’m into, whereas earlier it just a mashup of whatever I had in my suitcase or bought recently online. Blahblahblah enough of that, onto the fashions!!!
I’m still very much into long lengths and I bought this skirt on Etsy a few months back and have paired it with everything from crop tops to sweaters. Even though it’s wintertime here in Chicago, I refuse to give up on my sheer tops so I just layered it under a faux leather vest and skinny bowtie from ASOS. The sheerness keeps the outfit from being too covered up and stuffy. This Cast of Vices leather bag is my new favorite. I’m not a bag girl at all but I couldn’t pass up this one that is based on the plastic thank you takeout bags but is done is the softest lambksin leather.

It has finally cooled down enough to where I’m not melting into a puddle every time I step foot out of the house, therefore I’ve been easing back into wearing layers. This outfit isn’t anything special but it’s a precursor to what some of my fall 2011 wardrobe will include, namely the cropped pants and (amazing!) Kanye loafers. I’ve been dying to get my hands on a pair of cropped trousers of any kind. I purchased two pair from Curve and to make a long story short, they’re absolutely TERRIBLE. So I turned to the only jeans that have never let me down, the Tripp skinny jeans from Torrid and took advantage of their current BOGO sale and purchased two pairs in extra short to give the desired effect. My normal inseam is 34 inches and these have an inseam of 28 inches I believe. They really are the best jeans ever and even as they fade, they still look good!
In regards to the loafers, I saw this outfit that Kanye wore a while back and fell in love with the suede loafers he wore. I was determined to get my hands on something similar and was excited when I came across these on ASOS from the brand River Island. Since I walk about 98% of the places I go here in Chicago, I have to be more practical when it comes to my footwear selection. While I’ll always love my heels and wedges, I won’t be that girl on the train in 5 inch platforms. Therefore, I’ve been buying lots of cute loafers and ballet flats for the fall.
There’s been some slight changes since my last update but the gist of it is this: new city, new job, new home, same color palette. Although Chicago’s humidity seems to be unrelenting, some things never change, my love of black clothing. I did a bit of online shopping last week since the only clothes that I brought with me were sheer, cropped or bodycon (or my fave – all three) and not quite work appropriate. I bought this ballerina dress from Forever21+ and I’m sure I’ll be wearing it quite often this summer. It’s knit with a tulle overlay and was perfectly toughened up with my trusty Evans biker vest (now amazingly accessorized with a few pins from indiegoespop). The sunglasses I found on ebay and they were only $3, so now I can finally stop obsessing over round lenses.
Since Brittney took these photos and they aren’t completely horrible, I’ll probably start posting outfits more often (or as often as I can).
The camera cut off during the first one, so the second one is just a continuation. Below are a few of the items that I mentioned in the video, you can click the links and it’ll take you to their respective sites. Also mentioned, Brittney’s brand-spanking-new blog Born in Sequins!
Contrary to what this blog may showcase, there are times when I’m over wearing dresses, skirts or heels. When I’m quickly running errands and not wanting to really get dressed, this is what I wear. I picked up this simple black top from Dorothy Perkins a while ago but I rarely wear it unfortunately. It has puff shoulders that give a little edge to an otherwise basic shirt. I picked up these knit pants from Avenue back in February and they serve as my go-to lounge pants of sort. I bought them a few sizes larger so that I can just pull the legs up and let them drape. I also threw on these wedges I picked up in an Evans sale. They’re 3 inches but honestly they feel like flats. As mentioned before, as long I don’t look like I’m going to walk the dog, I’m okay.
One of the things I’m forcing myself to do more of is shop in my closet. If you can believe it, I have clothes stored in three separate rooms in my house. I have clothes in suitcases, I have clothes in closets, in dressers, in tubs… everywhere. I have the habit of just rotating the same 20 or so items in my closet and not wearing much else. To break that up, today I decided to dig a bit further into my wardrobe and pull out some things that rarely get any love. Every piece in the this outfit is something that I’ve either never worn or have only worn once or so.
This leather fringed vest is something that I thrifted almost two years, I wore in one of the first outfits I ever posted on this blog (heads up, the outfit was terrible) and I haven’t worn it since. It felt too cowgirl-ish to me so it sat in my closet. This white sheer top is actually cropped (I just tucked it in) and I picked it up in the sale Nasty Gal had back in February I believe. The armholes were really small so I had to do some DIY to make it work, I just snipped the threads on both sides and voila, plus-size friendly! This skirt is one that I picked up from JIBRI about a month ago but it had just been sitting on my dresser since I got it. It’s the same as her amazing high waist flare skirt but its a different material than the cotton twill and it has a very subtle black-on-black dot pattern. The booties are ones I picked up in the Evans sale a couple months ago for about $15. I have to give it to Evans, I have two pairs of heels from them and they are really really comfortable. You can run, jump or whatever without worrying about spraining your ankle. The champagne bodysuit underneath was also picked up in the Evans sale for $7. I love sales!
As I previously mentioned, I’m all about fat girls in crop tops this Summer. I picked up this top in the mid-season sale at ASOS (it’s from the main range, size UK18/US14) and it’s pretty much perfection. Since the wind was blowing a bit today, I layered it over my lace bodysuit from Evans to keep things covered a bit. This red pleated skirt was another eBay score, it was only $5 and it serves as one of the few colorful items in my closet.
These platform mary-janes from Forever21 are the most uncomfortable pair of heels I own. I’m not sure if it’s because of the arch or the actual height of the heel (5 inches) but they are only for those outings where I won’t be standing for long periods of time. It sucks because they are super cute but really unbearable after a few hours.
It finally feels like Springtime outside and the perfect way to celebrate that is by debuting these shorts I picked up in a Torrid clearance sale a while back. I usually don’t pay much attention to their sales but these were $4.99 and I couldn’t resist.
Although (one of) my favorite parts of my body is my legs, I never wear shorts. The reason? They seem way too casual, I always feel like shorts lend themselves to either washing the car or going to the beach/pool. Nothing more, nothing less. I decided that I needed to find a way to put them into rotation in my wardrobe so I paired them with my trusty oversized sheer shirt. Added a slight pop of color (I’m all over tan/camel colors this Summer!) with a camel belt and satchel with black oxfords from the Evans sale. The sun has been beaming so hats are a must as sun damage is not on my must-have list this year. This is still a bit casual but it doesn’t look like I’m going to walk the dog or something so… I deem it a success.
Even though Spring collections are just starting to be rolled out in stores, I can say that I haven’t been terribly impressed by any of the offerings. It seems like my usual critique (too many florals and pastels) of Spring fashions is holding true. However, that won’t stop my shopping habit! Since I was a huge fan of both the Prada and Jil Sander S/S11 collections, I picked up a couple items from ASOS clearly inspired by them. That banana crop top is pretty much the best thing ever and I plan to wear it with a short, full skirt I got from Jibri. The blazer from SimplyBe is the perfect spicy brown color but I’m not sure what I’m wearing it with yet, same with the Evans chinos.
Since I’ve decided that this season is all about crop tops and sheer shirts and I’m not seeing exactly what I want from plus size retailers, I’ve turned my attention to eBay and Etsy. It also comes in handy when you want to participate in a trend but don’t want to spent a lot of money on it. For instance, I’m loving the midi length pleated skirts that ASOS has in stock but I’m not paying $70 for it, so I went on ebay and found both a red and a black one for $5 and $8 respectively. Talk about a deal! So what is at the top of your Spring shopping list?
