One collection that I surprisingly liked was from IGIGI. Not to say that IGIGI never has nice clothing but I’ve always felt that their clothing was a bit too sophisticated for me. That is still somewhat the case however, I actually loved everything that was shown. I’m not the IGIGI woman but I can see these clothes fitting seamlessly into a lot of different women’s wardrobes. IGIGI almost reminds me of Diane von Furstenberg, as the line has the potential to be just as big. The only difference is that DVF has a coolness about it that keeps the clothes from being too sweet. I’ll be interested in seeing how the IGIGI line and brand continues to evolve but this collection was a great effort.

The entire premise of fashion weeks all across the world is to, you know, show off your fashion. Yet two days went past and I forgot to take pictures of what I wore. The only proper outfit picture I took was on day 3, which is a more casual day since the day’s activities were panel sessions. Day three was also the day that I’d thought I’d be on-time for an event, nope didn’t happen. However, I still had fun and got to meet and talk with a lot of cool people. These photos are more of a mashup of things that happened all week, enjoy!

Another show-stopping collection was the expanded Swimwear/Resort collection for veteran Monif C. While there were pieces that we’ve seen before such as the fringed and ruffled bathing suits, she sent out a lot of new styles that are sure to turn heads. My favorite look from the show was the retro snakeskin bikini! It was accessorized perfectly and the model definitely sold it. Of course, the black lace-up one piece was a favorite as well. As soon as I saw it, I was thinking of outfits to wear it with.

Another one of my favorite FFFWeek finale collections was from Toronto-based line Pheline. Ava Jones, the designer behind the line, debuted her first collection in 2009 at says her goal is to bring voluptuous beauty to the forefront in fashion through her designs. The collection shown at FFFWeek had a definite vintage femininity to it. The models, each with a fedora, slowly sauntered down the runway to a smooth jazz soundtrack until a pulsating beat took over mid-way through. The clothes were sexy yet tasteful and even though the silhouettes are simple, there’s enough interesting details to keep them interesting.

One of the highlights of opening night of Full Figured Fashion Week was, no doubt, the Chan.nel Karama show. LaToya Skinner, designer of the line, sent down sleek and edgy designs that got everyone in the room’s attention. From the opening look (the super fierce jacket with shoulder pleating detail) to the last look (a body hugging maxi dress) and everything in between, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I appreciated her vision and her confidence in designing things for plus women that we usually never see. While every single piece wasn’t my style, I couldn’t help but love it all.
What do you all think? Do you love it or is it too edgy for you?
ps. The designs shown will be available for purchase in July.

If you remember my post about FFFWeek from last year, you’ll remember that I was less than thrilled with most of the clothes that were sent down the runway. I had no idea what to expect going into this year’s event but I wanted to go with an open mind. I had no expectations, I just wanted to see a great show. From the opening night event to the finale runway show, there were so many amazing clothes shown and new designers discovered! I’ll be posting the collection from both runway shows over the next few days so be sure to let me know what you think!
One of my favorite finale collections from FFFWeek 2010 was from Susan Moses. Although the collection was mostly black, there was a superb mix of textures that kept things fresh rather than looking identical. There were feathers, beading, metallic detailing, ruffles and leather – pretty much everything that makes my heart go pitter-patter.
As Susan stated, this collection is for a women who is confident and one who sets trends rather than follows them. I love that she did tops, jackets, pants, leggings, dresses and jumpsuits so that there is something that works for everybody. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for when this collection is available.

Ashanti, in SKWilbur
Last night at the BLVD in New York City, Full Figured Fashion Week 2010 kicked off with a runway show featuring designers from plus size staples like Just My Size as well as soon-to-be plus size staples Channel Karama and Jaspher Knowles. There were some great fashions on display at the event so when I had time (as I spent most of the night in the Press pit, taking runway pics), I wanted to take showcase the style of the people who were attending the events. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of my outfit before the event but I’ll definitely be sure to do that at the before the rest of the events!
ps. I have over 950 pics to shift through from the runway show last night but if you’re interested in seeing some sneak peek fashions, I’ve posted some on Facebook!

If you happen to follow me on Twitter, then you know that I decided not to attend Full Figured Fashion Week in New York. I instead decided a trip to San Francisco was in order. However, Gabi went and covered most of the events. She just posted runway photos from the finale show so make sure you head over there to take a look!
To be honest, I’ve been comtemplating blogging about FFFWeek because I didn’t want to come off as a Negative Nancy. I appreciate all the hard work and effort that went into creating something like that and I do not want to take anything away from it BUT I felt that the clothing that was showcased didn’t live up to the hype. I think Gabi hit the nail on the head, the clothing was not amazing but the fact that they were modeled by amazingly beautiful plus sized women took the attention away from that and focused moreso on the celebration of something like FFFWeek even existing. I defintely respect and am glad that the show was such a success however, for someone like me, it was a let down.
It is a huge annoyance that plus size fashion seems to be nothing but jersey knits and flowy tops and dresses. Sure there’s a place for it and I know that it is summertime and everything but I just, I don’t know, I just felt like everything that was shown was something that I’ve seen before, probably at Torrid. I’m used to being FLOORED by the likes of Gareth Pugh and I want that same feeling when I see fat fashion on the runway. I didn’t get that feeling. Not once. I think that there were some things that were cool but very few pieces, if any, is what i would call FASHION. There needed to be that one designer that throws out all the rules of dressing plus size women and goes out there and presents some amazing shit. THAT is what I’m looking for. THAT is what I’d thought I’d see. THAT is what was missing. THAT was one of my biggest disappointments.
Like I said, I commend them for their efforts but this was supposed to be groundbreaking and the clothing failed to reflect that. There’s talks that FFFWeek is going to Australia, I just hope that it will be more diverse and fashion-forward than its US counterpart.
